Article That Makes It Good

Kategori Category : Writing
Read Times Read : 16
Date Date : 25 April 2008 07:00

by: Mike Long

Writing articles requires skill and continuous practice. But writing good articles requires more than these. So you would ask: "What are the components of an article?" "What could be the common mistakes of these writers? What makes the article a good one?"

Here are the answers to these questions:

An article intends to grab the attention of the reader. It also aims to send the intended message of the article written to the readers. If these 2 goals are not reached, the article is useless. Many article writers would fail in this stage alone.

So what should be done to avoid it?

An Article is composed of 3 important components: the title, the body, and the depth.

A good title tells everything about the whole article so if the title alone could not attract the reader, reading the rest of the article is pointless. The title should keep the readers interested to the topic. Make sure that your title corresponds to the whole article especially the first paragraph.

After the title, the body should be taken into consideration. The body should be interesting. It should not give any misleading information about the topic.

When we say depth, we mean insights. A good article should be appealing to the general readers. Your article should not need be an Einstein to get what it means. Meaning, it should not have to be too technical and scientific. It also should not give the impression that your article makes your readers dumb. Write for the middle, the average people. This is the safest place and they are plenty.

Common mistakes usually come with grammar, punctuation, and spelling. These 3 would destroy every single word of your article. To avoid these, edit your article. You will be surprised to spot errors scattered all over your articles. Afterwards, let your article be proofread by another person. This would give the article a good run if it would pass and also pinpoint the mistakes you miss.

Too much bragging and advertising would mean disaster. Self-serving words would draw readers away. Never infuse anger to your readers at all cost. They read because they want to be entertained.

Make it simple. Let your reader figure out easily what you mean. The fact that the reader gives attention to your article means you have his/her interest. If your content is good enough, your reader will surely know what you are trying to point out. Keep your article short. Or if you can squeeze all your thoughts in the shortest terms possible, do so.

An article with so many superfluous words could not add any credit to its popularity. Instead, use clear words and make your article readable. As much as possible, squeeze your thoughts on a good, well-written paragraph with vocabularies that are common to all.

Mistakes often occur on the format. Do not punish your readers by writing long paragraphs. An article is a complete turn of if it contains big blocks of letters. If this happens, readers would only scan the first sentence of the paragraph or would not give your article any chance to be read. 5-7-line-paragraph is ideal and easier to absorb and easier to read. Also use bullet and numbers to give your readers an easy reading.

From here we go back to the question: what makes a good article? Four words: Simple, short, and clear!

About The Author

Mike Long is a well known writer and is offering 300 people hundreds of well-written, niche content articles each month with NO strings attached. The most popular case study in the marketing/PR arsenal is the 500-700 word success story. Theyre not as challenging to write as white papers, but you should structure them for maximum impact. Different companies use different structures for their case studies, but all should follow the same general pattern: 1. Company overview and challenge 2. Project details 3. Positive results (of course) Customer Overview and Challenge Start with a 2-3 paragraph overview of the customers company. This should be very positive - since youre going to detail a problem the customer was having, the last thing you want to do is make them sound like jerks. So compliment them. Feel free to adapt the overview from their own Website text, where theyre already placing themselves in the best possible light. Then move on to the business challenge. Dont make the customer sound stupid or incompetent. The challenge should always be centered on something good that is happening to them - fast growth, industry prominence, strategic IT changes - whatever. Their challenge should be applicable to your readers own business issues. Project Details No project goes perfectly, but save the debriefing for the longer-form trade journal article. These short case studies should report on the successful project by briefly discussing specific products and benefits. Dont go all over the map. If the project is fairly narrow or specific, you wont have any trouble sticking with the main point. In the case of large and complex installations, concentrate on the main point. For example, Microsoft Great Plains has more modules than you can shake a stick at. Concentrate on the ones that had the most positive impact on your customer. Business Benefits Always quantify improvement when you can. Numbers can be dollar savings, percentages, or other measures of saved staff time, more efficient workflows, better customer service, etc. Be sure that the benefits you list are the benefits the customer perceives - hard costs are most easily quantified, but soft costs may have the higher perceived benefit to a customer. Ideally you will list both. When NOT to Write a Case StudyWhat are the most common blocks to partnering with a customer for a case study? 1.Your customer is really unhappy. Theyd do a case study all right, but you wouldnt want them to. If youre the hapless individual setting up the initial interview, be sure that the customer really is happy and is open to talking to you. Otherwise theyll just give you an earful. Fix: promise the customer that youll pass on all of his comments to the technical support team, or whoever you think will best handle it. Then do it, and forget about it. 2.Customers who fear their market will punish them. Prime example: legal firms with security issues. Sure you helped them through a security project and now theyre Fort Knox, but they dont want their clients to dream that a problem ever existed in the first place. Fix: Forget it. Theyll never give you permission to produce the study. Besides, theyre probably right. 3.Your customer is an exacting IT type who is suspicious of the success story format. This customer considers the project a success too, but they dislike purely positive spins - and no project is perfect. Fix: If they are happy for the most part, get a buy-in that the project really was successful. Dont put him off about the negatives, capture those comments too and promise to pass them on. (Then do it.) This is usually enough to secure the interview. 4.Your customer is scared to be interviewed. This is usually the IT guy who did all the footwork, and prefers to stay behind the scenes. He (or she) will either be too nervous to talk, or will despise you because he doesnt think youve got the technical chops. Usually both. Fix: Understand the technology youre interviewing about. You dont have to be an engineer, but you should understand IT pressures and issues. Ask leading questions, but if they clam up and wont talk, thank them and hang up. Tell your customer contact that youre so happy you got to talk to the technician, and now could you talk to a project manager too? It has paid off with 3 best selling books for me in the past year. How does it work in Internet Bookselling? Let me explain.Websites generally have three characteristics that help them consistently remain in the top search engine standings:1. Websites must add and change their content often. (Once or twice a day is perfect)2. Websites must offer an e-zine or newsletter. The top websites offer newsletters and e-zines that are delivered via e-mail every day.3. Websites will usually have their own bookstore with an affiliation or association with Amazon.com to allow visitors a method of purchasing books that complement the information on the website.Top websites spend a great deal of time and money to remain at the top of the heap. Everyone wants to be there, but only a few can hold down those top positions.Understanding these three characteristics have enabled me to achieve my goals by helping websites achieve their goals.Step One: Search for the Big Guys on the InternetI have two areas of expertise. I am a hypnotist who writes books and e-books on how to achieve success through hypnosis. I am also an E-book Marketing Consultant and write books on how to write and sell e-books.In order to find top websites that may be interested in hypnosis, I search on broader topics like "health" and "mental health." For my books on E-book marketing I search on topics like "Internet marketing" and "E-commerce."Even though there are hundreds of search engines and thousands of directories, I begin with searching on Yahoo. Yahoo is a directory that is difficult to get into and even more difficult to maintain a high ranking. From my own experience once I made the top of the heap in Yahoo, under "hypnotism" my web traffic more than doubled and stayed that way over the past three years. Therefore, I conclude that the websites that arise to the top of Yahoo will be much more highly visited than through other search engines and directories.Step Two: Help the Webmaster Offer More ContentOnce I search under the two major categories that fit my topic, I send e-mail to the webmasters at those sites sending along my article or sample chapter.I tell the webmasters I would appreciate posting my article for their readers in return for a short bi-line or description on what I do and a link over to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com or my own website in return for the favor. Most webmasters jump at the opportunity at receiving free content that allows them to maintain the high rankings on their websites.Step Three: Help the Website Newsletter EditorThe top ranking websites also sponsor their own newsletter or e-zine. After contacting the webmaster about content added directly to the website, I then contact the newsletter editor in regards to placing an article or sample chapter in the newsletter. Sometimes at the bottom of a sample newsletter there will be specific instructions on how to submit articles. Many times there is even a section on the website where you can post your articles directly to the editor. After following the directions in the newsletter, I submit my article or sample chapter to the website newsletter editor.I have just added more content to their website, again helping the website increase traffic and at the same time direct interested visitors to my book offerings located in the authors bi-line.Step Four: Help the Website Bookstore Make MoneyMost of the time, you will find that the top websites also have their own bookstore. Usually the Website bookstore will be an "associate of Amazon.com."For example: You search on the keyword "health" on Yahoo and are taken to the top five health sites. Lets call the top website "health.com."After navigating around the website you find a Health.com bookstore that offers many titles on a particular aspect of health you are interested in. When you click on a book cover on that website, you are immediately sent over to a book description page on Amazon.com.If you look at the complete link that shows up in your browser you will see an URL (the Internet address) which looks something like this:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1929695217/healthcom/104-2910323-8772701The two most important parts of the link are the ISBN number which is the number called "ASIN/" which is Amazon.coms identification number, and the words following the books ISBN number which is "/healthcom.""Healthcom" is the websites Amazon.com Associate identification number. Shes a brand new writer, has a column going in her local paper, and really enjoys writing. The email she was sent is as follows, only the name of the person sending it has been changed:

Dear Columnist,

Recently the word butt was used in one of your columns. That word is inappropriate, in poor taste, crude, and offensive. The fact that it is used on tv does not change a thing. I appreciate your being able and interested in writing and would like for it to be above reproach.

Best to you.

Ward Cleaver

She wants to know what I think of it, and what would be the most appropriate way to respond.

As I sit here pondering her request, the full range of potential responses seems to be these:

# The immature response. This is the one youd go with if you fired back an immediate, gut check-like response. Youd tell the guy that he should find some Barney reruns to spend his time watching and then imply that he must be a real firecracker in most other aspects of his personal life. Youd then close it out with a reminder that this is a free country and that he was free (and encouraged) to read something other than your column in the future.

# The sarcastic approach. Tell the reader that youll try to do better in the future, and that the slip up in the column is easily explainable. Then, go into how you and your friends went out drinking the night before, entered a Who Can Cuss The Best contest at a local bar, and that the carry over from that slipped into your column when you wrote it the next day. Promise your reader that itll never happen again, as you definitely want to live your life above reproach, and then swear to watch twenty episodes of The Brady Bunch as penance.

# The politicians approach. Take no responsibility for your wording by telling the reader that you actually wanted to use the term heiny, tookus, or twin pink apples, but were prevented from doing so by your editor. Then, go into great detail about your poor as Jobs turkey upbringing, adding that it was hard for you to learn proper language usage skills because you grew up in a shack with seventeen brothers and sisters. Close by offering to let the offended reader write a guest column in place of yours the next week, recommend to them some web sites offering free government programs and money, and each Arbor Day from here on out faithfully send them a pine tree seedling.

# The avoidance approach. Email back a terse two-liner, telling them that you appreciate the feedback but that your schedule is so hectic that you cant possibly respond to it. Wish them eternal peace and happiness in the closing line.

# The mature approach. Email your reader back, let them know you appreciated them giving you feedback, and never comment on what you personally thought of their message. Then thank them and close it out. Sweet, simple, and very mature.

It looks like my friend is going to choose the last option, which is certainly the best one to take. But a thought now occurs to me - maybe, instead of these approaches, her good writer friend should just tell her that shes doing fine, and not to let stuff like this bother her too much. He should also take the time to remind her that not everyone is going to like everything that you write or say, and all you can do is your best and gracefully accept whatever comes along as a result. Finally, maybe her writer friend will simply remind her that her stuff is good, much better than some of the writing being done today by columnists thats so lame that a South Georgia tree buzzard could do better...

On second thought, I might better leave that last one out...she might start looking at me sort of quizzically after she reads it...

About The Author

Eds latest book, Rough As A Cob, can be ordered by calling River City Publishing toll-free at: 877-408-7078. You could wonder for a very long time, because theres no one, single reason people give quality items free of charge, in fact there are several. More often than not its to create confidence, generate credibility, and increase trust between the seller and the often wary buyer! The Internet is one of the scariest places to be, especially when seeing a product youd like to buy, from someone you dont know and may never have heard of until today, and you probably wont ever get to communicate with the seller in person. Difficult choice? Decide to buy, give your credit card number, take a risk? By giving something useful free of charge you can establish a relationship of trust between you and your prospective buyer. And if you are prepared to do this, go the extra mile, while rival companies focus always on Money First, Money Last, And Nothing In Between, youll win a customer, not just for a day, but possibly for life!Lets consider a whole host of reasons why offering free information can increase your business success.- To Raise Funds For A Special Cause- To Make It Easy For People To Enjoy Some Particular Experience- To Overcome Resistance To Buying Online- To Sell a Particular Product For Which The Same or a Similar Product is Available from Lots of Different Sources- To Gather Names For Your Database To Explain How to Use Your Product and Therefore Reduce Complaints, Queries and Requests for Refund- Simply To Sell- More Reasons to Give a Chapter, Introduction or Text Sample FREE- To Use The Same Advert To Sell Dozens of Different Products- To Solicit Testimonials - To Help Others Sell Your ProductLet us consider just a few of those ideas. To Make It Easy For People To Enjoy Some Particular ExperienceIn this case the book normally travels free or for a token sum to cover costs. A few examples will illustrate the purpose: • You remember Heartbeat (if youre not in the UK, youre missing a great TV series) where Claude Greengrass plagiarized a guide to walks over the Yorkshire Moors so guests on his rambling holidays could find their own way around, saving time and energy for him? Well thats an example, albeit a bad one in Claudes case, of publishing a book to help promote some other, usually profit-making purpose. • In the 1930s to 1950s, major UK firms provided all manner of information products to help customers enjoy their product and to hopefully buy from them in preference to rival companies. Oxo gave the famous tin container, Homepride flour gave the cute caricature set of flour men designed as flour sifters, salt and pepper cellars, and other kitchen paraphernalia. Many more firms gave books and other info products, including Stork and Bero whose recipe books are now collectors items, and many car makers whose motoring guides and atlases are also worth many pounds each. The idea was brilliant yet even so fell largely out of fashion and today its quite rare to find such valuable freebies to help customers benefit from their purchase and to poach custom from rival companies. Shame, and an idea well worth resurrecting! To Overcome Resistance To Buying OnlineIts a fact, in many countries people are still reluctant to place credit card orders on the Internet, despite the high security generally involved. So companies have to work harder to win sales over their bricks and mortar high street counterparts and one way to do this is to attract visitors to your web site to download something special - for free - and ultimately to sell prospects on the benefits of ordering online, particularly from you!The main benefit of offering free info products from your web site is to establish a relationship with individuals, and ultimately turn them into buyers. People are reluctant to order from faceless companies, people they may never get to see, and arent even sure they exist. The answer may surprise you.

Most childrens books are based on the same exact story - good versus evil.

Ex. Harry Potter vs Voldomort. Cinderella vs her wicked stepmother. Pinnochios conscience vs. outside influences.

Next we add a protagonist and an antagonist.

Ex. Dont we love it when Harry Potter and Malfoy get into it? Or when Hansel and Gretel turn the tables on the witch?

Finally a best selling story needs conflict and a big problem that the main character needs to overcome.

Ex. If Harry lets Lord Voldemort come back without a fight, the fate of the magic world could be at risk.

Ex. If Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire dont outsmart Count Olaf then their fortunes and their lives might be at risk.

Most inexperienced writers spend so much time thinking about the setting, the scenery and the color of their characters hair that they forget that the plot is what editors and their audience is looking for.

Hogwarts is a wonderful school. But who would care about it without Harry Potter and his friends.

The castle in Sleeping Beauty would just be another castle in the middle of nowhere without the princess and her prince.

And the three little pigs houses could have been made of snow, cotton or peanuts for all we would care without three clever little pigs and a wolf.

Kids love it when good triumphs over evil. Give them a story they can cheer over.

Also spend time really getting to know your characters. Create a history for each character, even if most of their histories will never see the inside of your book.

Your characters must seem real. Your audience must be able to relate to them and really care about what happens to them.

That in a nutshell is how you write a best selling childrens book. The editing, minor scenic details and hand wringing anxiety can come after you finish the book.

About The Author

Caterina Christakos is a published author and childrens book writer. She told me that in order to be creative, I must think creative. Find associations to people, places, and things that are out of the loop of being normal.

You see, Ive been struggling to get out a simple poem let alone some of my own blogging. The ideas and thoughts about my writing concepts have been just going blank. Call it an inactive muse if you will, but I think its much more than some made up fairy that tells an author what to write. I think in some ways, our own creativity and the ability to grasp odd imagery comes from life experiences and how we see the associations from one thing to another. Im a communications design engineer by trade, and I find it a little hard to associate some imagery and creativity with squiggly lines all over a map, or the endless numbers and information I find within the databases software. Its a little hard to find imagery in fiber optics that people will understand and get the meaning I could try for. But Im finding that its not my specific job functions that I can find creative beginnings or understandings. Its with the people I work with, my family, friends, and whoever I come into contact with. Its looking at something during my commute to work, and while it may seem normal, find a way to make it spectacular.

Here are a couple of examples:

Not long ago on our way into work, a beat up work truck with ladders all over the top passes us on the freeway. Thats pretty normal and nothing to concern more time with. However, it was the little details that caught the interest of Cyndi and a conversation that followed. You see, a taillight had been busted and they fixed it. Normally, youd see some type of plastic covering or red tape over the gaping hole to keep the light underneath from blinding the driver behind them. But, with our truckload of workers, they had to come up with something a little more creative. They cut the plastic label off of a Coca-Cola 2 liter bottle and duct taped it over the hole. The label was faded, but you could still make out the words and logo. We laughed at the redneck ingenuity, however, it immediately sparked an idea within a story that Ive wanted to write. It could be something big, or something little in the story.

Who knows, it could even be a part of the climax within my own imaginary world of writing. Its something as small as someones make-shift fix for a broken taillight that can spark a maelstrom of possibilities and associations. It doesnt have to be within a story, but maybe a poem. It seems that in the South, there are a lot of instances that will create a thought or image of something stimulating to the creative mind.

A while back, we were heading to lunch with my in-laws. When I sat down in the cream leather captains chair of the minivan, noticed a bug on the floor making way for my foot. I stepped on the bug and smeared it into the carpet. When Cyndi asked what happened to the minivan invader, I replied He was killed and quickly reincarnated into carpet. I didnt happen to think about what I was saying at the time, but the combination of bug and carpet just came together like this.

Have you ever had a family member who would make strange, yet hilarious associations in a quote about life? What were some of them and could you use it in a story?

Take a look at some successful musicians, novelists, and cartoonists. Im sure youll find associations of the abnormal. No matter how strange some of the imagery associations may be, they click within the readers mind and it makes sense. Take a quote from C.S. Lewis.

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad. ~ C. S. Lewis

I dont know about you, but the thought of an egg in flight is rather humorous. The message behind what he said impacts a persons mind not by what is said, but how the words paint a picture in the mind. Maybe years later, a person will remember this quote and the impacting meaning all because of the funny image the person received.

It all comes down to allowing our minds to think differently and wildly. In my experience, creativity comes when we push aside our normal living habits and thoughts, while still participating in our hum-drum activities. It comes from reading stories by other authors and listening to what one may have to say. Movies can give you ideas in a visual overload, but sometimes, to me, movies and TV shows rob us of our own artistic ability.

So, my questions to you are, how do you associate the normal into interesting and flamboyant ways of creativity? How do you find creativity and imagery?

Like a monkey stealing a soldiers last MRE, Im leaving you to your own thoughts.

About The Author

Shaun Dollins is an author on Writing.Com which is located at http://www.Writing.Com/ and is accessible by anyone.

He lives in the Atlanta, GA area and commutes to work everyday. I call them a comic book niche because these comic books would be made to appeal to or meet the needs to a certain group of people.

I would be very realistic with you. Everyone would not like what you have produced as a creator that is why it is impossible to create a comic book that everyone likes. People have different taste. With the number of comic book creators or aspiring creators only very few become what you can call successful. My belief is that more creators would be successful if they can create a comic book that relates to certain masses instead of trying to gratify everyone.

A Christian comic book is one of the best and easiest examples I could think of at the moment. Believe it or not there is a market for Christian comic books. People looking for a Christian comic book would most likely not be interested in a sexually oriented comic. At least lets hope not. But some creators and producers think that in order to make it as a comic book creator you have to come up with something that is erotic. We are all familiar with the common belief that sex sells, so the more barely clothed women and erotic material you put in the comic book the better your chances is suppose to be to get an audience. Many creators who created their comic book to fit this belief end up with a shock when they realize that there comic is still not getting readers. A sexually oriented comic book would most likely get some looks, and that is it. There would be no serious purchaser or reader because sexually oriented materials could be seen everywhere, but a good story is not as easy to come by.

My point is creators would most likely have a better chance at making it in the comic book world by creating comics that caters to certain people or needs rather than trying to compete with the big boys. For example, a Christian comic book would cater to a committed Christian, just like a comic book about evolution would appeal to a devoted evolutionist. I am not saying since there is a good market for a Christian comic book that creators should try to create a Christian comic book. Not at all, because if a Christian comic is not your interest, then please dont try it. But do find a comic book niche of interest to you and try to create a good storyline for it.

Know that to make a comic book for a specific need or people; you would be expanding your creativity because you would be forced to come up with new ideas relating to your comic book focus.

About The Author

Gideon Olade

Ive always considered comic books a very interesting and intelligent way of storytelling. However, lately Ive been seeing more creators trying to use explicit art to create an audience. This has caused me to research what has made some comic books and characters popular, and Id like to share this info with you. But our theme has to do more than reach its conclusion it has to be reinforced in the end and by doing this, it will strengthen all that we have said in our story.

So if we took a theme

Persist and in the end you will succeed

And I showed my character working hard to achieve his goals, persisting, even if at times those goals seemed unreachable, then I wouldve showed that all his hard work did pay off in the end. By having him succeed, it would reinforce the theme that had been running throughout the story.

Let me further illustrate this point by giving you a more detailed example.

The theme is

Persistence pays off

The story is about a writer, who has been writing short stories for years, but has not succeeded in getting published yet.

In your story you will show his persistence with

* How he makes time to write, even when his day is already full by his full time job and other responsibilities

* How his every thought is consumed by his writing

* Showing him sending story after story to publishers

* How he doesnt let the fact that his family believe hes wasting his time, distract him from his purpose

Simultaneously I will place him in win and lose situations - Losing when his stories are rejected - Winning when he receives encouraging notes from publishers.

And in those instances where he is winning, I will show gradually that resistance is starting to pay off, till I reach the end of my story where I will have one of his stories accepted for publication and thus bring my theme of Persistence pays off to its conclusion.

By showing the reader how persistence is paying off, I would have reinforced the theme in my ending.

Is your theme reinforced in the end of your story?

About The Author

Besides his passion for writing, Nick Vernon runs an online gift site where you will find gift information, articles and readers funny stories.

How To Article
Writers write. You shouldnt wait around for inspiration to come. But sometimes, there are days you cant get anything written down. Or youre at a loss for words. You cant think of anything to write. You dont have any idea what to write about.

And then you end up believing youre having writers block.

You end up believing it too much, you stop writing altogether. You might even think of yourself as not a real writer.

And all because of what? You think your muse deserted you? You think you have writers block?

Think again! You dont need inspiration to write! What you do need are prompts to help get your writers mind working and your hands writing or typing.

These prompts are your beginnings; the glimmer; the little sparks that you can shape and fashion into stories, articles, essays and features.

You dont need inspiration. All you need is an idea.

And here are a dozen seeds you can try out for yourself:

1. The first typewriter was patented on July 23, 1829. Interview some of the writers in your group and find out how they write. You can develop this into a light-hearted articles about writers.

2. Many fictional characters are not fictional at all. Write about one real person who has been fictionalized.

3. Electricity is a recent discovery. Think of 10 things to do when theres no power.

4. Pirates no longer just refer to the highwaymen of the seas. There are different breeds of pirates today. Write about todays pirates and what theyre pirating.

5. Many words in the English language come from the names of people -- such as mesmerize (from Mesmer, a hypnotist). Find out more words from peoples names and write the story behind the words.

6. The US Declaration of Independence begins with this line: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..." Write you own Declaration of Independence by using the same line as your starting point.

7. How do you start a fan club? Write a how-to on organizing a fan club for a favorite author, singer, actor or sports figure.

8. How do planets die?

9. Expound or dispute this: "Where science ends, religion begins."

10. Take a look at your bookshelf. Pick one book and write a review of it.

11. How is privacy invaded on the Internet?

12. Write an article on how to choose a pet. Target your piece for kids aged 7-10

About The Author

Copyright © 2003-2004 Shery Ma Belle Arrieta-Russ

Shery is the creator of Ebook Pizzazz(tm). The title was identical to the title of an article I wrote and which was published in WebProNews in May 1999.

"Probably just a coincidence", I thought to myself, and kept reading. But the first paragraph stopped me in my tracks. It was quite clearly plagiarized from my article. As I kept reading I recognized sentence after sentence that had been lifted from my article and then modified slightly.

The whole article was plagiarized. I could hardly believe it. As the English say, I was gob-smacked.

What Is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism comes from the Latin word plagiarius, a kidnapper. Here are two dictionary definitions of plagiarism:

[to] take (the work or idea of someone else) and pass it off as ones own (Concise Oxford Dictionary, Third Edition, 1999).

to appropriate ideas, passages etc. from another work or author (Collins Dictionary of the English Language, ed. P. Hanks 1979).

Plagiarism can be done in many ways, but the most common technique is to paraphrase someone elses words.

Heres an example:

Original:

"And if youve matched the ezine to the product youre selling, youve reached your target audience."

Plagiarized version:

"If you have correctly matched the ezine or newsletter to the product youre selling, then you will have reached your target audience."

As you can see, the plagiarist has simply taken the original and then replaced the phrase youve matched with the phrase you have correctly matched, inserted the words or newsletter, and replaced the word youve with the words then you will have.

Part of the reason that plagiarism is so rampant on the Internet is that many people genuinely believe that its okay to take someone elses writing, make a few changes, and then present it as their own.

Is Plagiarism a Crime?

As far as I know plagiarism is not a crime in most countries, and this is probably because plagiarism is so difficult to define. How many words does a plagiarist have to substitute and rearrange before the copied version ceases to be a copy of the original?

This is why plagiarism is much more difficult to deal with than copyright theft. A copyright thief simply steals your work, lock-stock-and-barrel. A plagiarist steals your work and disguises it as their own.

But while plagiarism may not be a crime, it is heavily sanctioned in professions that are based on the written word. I know of one professor of sociology who lost his job almost overnight because he plagiarized someone elses work. And in journalism the consequences of being exposed as a plagiarist would be the same.

Unfortunately, internet plagiarism is flourishing. Theres now a whole industry that supplies college students with model term papers for the purpose of plagiarism. Here are just some of the websites that are part of this industry:

School Sucks http://www.schoolsucks.com/

Other Peoples Papers http://www.oppapers.com/

Evil House of Cheat http://www.cheathouse.com/

But the plagiarism industry has spawned another industry: websites and software designed to detect plagiarism. One such software was developed by turnitin.com (www.turnitin.com) and plagiarism.org (www.plagiarism.org).

This is how it works: the software makes a digital fingerprint of a submitted document using an elaborate set of algorithms. That fingerprint is then checked against a database that contains over 1 billion publicly-available web pages. Plagiarism.org then produces an originality report that gives the user an index of how original the submitted paper was, and whether it falls above or below the plagiarism threshold.

This software, however - while an excellent tool for college professors - probably wouldnt help writers find out if their work has been plagiarized.

What Can You Do About It?

The Internet is so vast, chances are you wouldnt know if someone had plagiarized your work. I only discovered that my work had been plagiarized because the author sent his plagiarized article to me for publication in my own newsletter.

But if you do discover that someone has plagiarized one of your articles, you could do what I did.

I immediately contacted the author of the article and requested that he email everyone to whom he had sent the article, explaining that it was plagiarized, and that they should on no account publish it. I added that if he did not withdraw the article from circulation I would contact his web host and the moderators of any lists that distributed the article.

The author replied within a few hours and admitted that the similarity between the 2 articles was "VERY uncanny". He said he had no idea "how they could be so similar". But after a few emails, he did withdraw the article.

In a way, its a compliment when someone plagiarizes your work: it means youre writing good stuff. But thats little consolation. If you make your living from writing on the Internet, plagiarism could be the greatest threat to your livelihood.

(c) 2001 by Michael Southon

About The Author

Michael Southon has been writing for the Internet for over 3 years. Of course, they are the top Journalists who write Press Releases and always write them in the 3rd person. You could determine what they do and then follow their procedures. BUT ! Wait, that is not enough. It is said, that the information structure of a Press Release follows the inverted pyramid in form. That is, most of the real information is displayed in a top heavy manner. (1) Like the Press Release, the 1st thing to be done is grab the readers interest immediately. However, due to this Promotion Articles size and unlike a Press Release . . (2) You must maintain the readers interest at a high level throughout the entire Promotion Article. Part (2) can be achieved by introducing real people (by name etc.) and describe their success stories while they were using your product(s) and or service(s). Either within this description or as a follow up afterwards, try to come up with verbal quotes related to it and/or printed quotes from publications. If you can do this quote part, it will provide the confirmation that will make your descriptive story believable. It puts the icing on the cake. To maintain a high level of interest throughout follow up with some more descriptive happenings with real people (and their names) and include verbal quotes and/or quotes from publications and so on and so on . . . Here is a Promotion Article: "Read it" and see if it adheres to these rules: Our NEW Invention Says . . . by J. Bruce Jones , Goodbye to . . Learning is Boring, and Welcome . . . Play to Learn, have Fun and Excel Say goodbye to Student Boredom in class . . AND a Big Hello to Student Enthusiasm to participate. Students can get involved and have fun while playing their way to excellence. Some students become unnerved when they think that they are subjected to undue pressures that could cause them to fail or do poorly. Ideally, such students should be encouraged to put forth a best effort without feeling these pressures. Most teachers would likely agree with this, but they might wonder . . how so? How Might This Be Handled? page 2 of 3 Educators: Middle School to University and certainly all Chess teachers , in Schools and Chess Clubs . . should take a look at what Steve Preston of Milton accomplished. First, here is one more point to consider. Without a stimulating learning environment to tweak their interest some students could become bored or revert to obnoxious behavior. Here Are Some Positive Results: This is How a teacher with (i) chess instruction courses and (ii) curricula courses Succeeded beyond his greatest hopes! Steve Preston, a Middle School teacher in Milton, Ontario, Canada was able to see the potential of utilizing our NEW invention. . . Chessapeak Challenge, the Worlds First Successful 4 Player partnership Chess that uses traditional Chess rules. For more than 2 centuries many attempts have been made to create a viable 4 player chess game. According to David Pritchard all attempts have failed because of 2 major problems with pawn Movement. Chessapeak Challenge gets over both problems as stated in his published review in the Autumn 1995 United Kingdom Chess Journal. Back to Steve: At each chess class meeting, Steve designated 4 students to each Chessapeak Challenge game board. Chess partners faced each other and therefore, each player had a partner across from him/her, an opponent on the left and an opponent on the right. In a clockwise order each player took his/her turn in order. Since this was a learning mode, players were allowed to discuss chess moves and chess strategies with each other. Therefore, all players were learning from each other. Results: At the Regional Chess Tournament, this Milton School system (for the 1st time ever) won the Chess Tournament Championship with 4 of their players named as the best . Educators in School Systems (read this): Concurrent to his chess teaching Steve Preston structured all his Math classes and all his Science classes around this 4 Player partnership Chess game. His happy students did so well in all his newly structured curricula courses that many parents of other students tried to enroll their children in Steves classes for the next year. For me, the ultimate Magic Garden would be planted using the Feng Shui bagua as a guideline for the boundaries of the plot and incorporate flowers herbs and plants that correspond to each signifigant direction..The first thing I would suggest, is to mark off your garden(or balcony full of pots) as a square (or as close to a square as you can get it) and determine the directions -- north, south, east and west. Then use the rough guideline below, taking into account your climate and seasons to know what to plant where to bring you health, wealth, peace, guidance, happiness and protection. You dont have to incorporate all the suggestions below of course -- just a couple of touches here in there might do wonders. The SOUTHERN corner of your garden governs recognition and fame. The flowers you plant there should be predominantly red in colour. Red and pinks should be main theme, although there well be flowers in there included for properties besides colour. Flowers that bring you fame: poppies, roses, bluebells, violets. Trees: Cherry, orange. Foilage: Holly, hazel, heather and all ferns. Herbs: Star anise, veviter. Trees: .Produce: strawberries, leeks, chili peppers. This corner also represents the Fire element so it is a good area to string up lights, put the barbeque or have a little hearth for fire. The SOUTHWESTERN corner governs marriage prospects and marital happiness. The predominant flower colour should be yellow. Flowers for emotional security: daffodils, lillies, tulips, asters, bleeding hearts, daisies, roses, gardenia, lavender, orchid, poppy, primrose, periwinkle, hyacinth, trilliums, violet, geranium. Trees: Magnolia Fig, Willow, Olive Elm, Plum,Foilage: Myrtle, rye, witch grass, juniper, chickweed. Herbs: basil, marjoram, dill, mint, rosemary, thyme. Produce: Ginger, endive, raspberries, tomatoes. This area represents Big Earth so it is a good place to put a stone statue or a large rock or boulder. The WESTERN corner governs children and fertility. The predominant flowers should be yellow and white. Flowers: Lavender, Cyclamen, Lily of the Valley, Morning Glory Trees: Oak, olive, banana, apple pine Foilage; Hawthorne Herbs:Mustard, catnip. Produce: Beans, carrots, cucumbers, grape, mustard. This area is known as Small Metal and would benefit from some windchimes or small silvery objects that catch the sun.The NORTHWESTERN corner governs helpful people or mentors. The predominamt flower colour should be white yellow and orange. Flowers: Passion flower, sweetpea, Sunflower, Iris, carnation Trees: Lemon, peach, beech, walnut Foilage: Rowan, Myrtle, dogwod, clover Herbs: Pennyroyal, lemon balm, sage Produce: peppers, fennel, pumpkins, squash. This corner is called "Big Metal" so it is a good place to put table and chairs to invite the help into your life. The NORTH corner governs career prospects. The flowers here should bepredominately dark purple or blue. Flowers that boost career: Camellia, honeysuckle, jasmine, periwinkle, poppy, trillium, snapdragons, dandelion.Trees: Orange, elder, apple, oak, maple, poplar Foilage: bromeliads, myrtle,Irish moss (all mosses), ferns Herbs: dill, goldenseal, mint Produce:cashews rice, grapes, onions, oats, peas, wheat. This direction representswater, so it is the ideal place to put a fountain or pool. Add fish to itand double your luck. The NORTHEAST corner governs education and wisdom. The flowers here should be predominatly yellow and orange. Flowers: jasmine, marigold, roses, iris , sunflower. Trees: peach, bohdi, acacia Foilage: bracken, all grasses, flax Herbs: borage, eyebright, peppermint, saffron, thyme, rosemary, caraway, rue, savory, mint Produce: celery, onons, grapes. This area is "Small Earth" so it is good for a rock garden, a small alter or a birdbath. The EAST governs family relationships and health. The foilage here should mainly be green and filled with bush or trees. This area is called Big Wood which is why it is good to have at least one big tree there or a tree house. The SOUTHEAST governs wealth and prosperity and should be as green and lush as possible. Flowers that bring wealth: Camelia, golden rod, helorope, honeysuckle, trillum Trees: all fruit trees, pecan, walnut, oak, pine Foilage: all bromelaids, mosses and ferns Herbs basil, clover, dill, mint, vervaine Produce: lettuce, corn, peas, oats, onions. Articles , Article
by: Lisa Angelettie MSW

There is a huge sexual movement going on. Its not about gay pride. Its not about sex among the elderly. Its not even a hidden Viagra agenda Im speaking of. Today, its all about the asexual a.k.a. the person who has no interest in having sex. Does this sound like you?

Case Study

*Monica is 24-year-old woman who lives a healthy and vibrant life. She has a satisfying job as a registered nurse, loves to swim, and is in a new 8-month relationship.

Whats unique about her relationship is that neither she or her boyfriend are interested in having sex with each other or anyone else for that matter. They are what they describe as "asexuals", and where many physicians and psychologists would call this a problem that needs to be addressed - Monica and her boyfriend feel it is a just a part of who they are and there is nothing wrong with it.

"There is absolutely nothing wrong with us. Me and *Jim have just never experienced sexual attraction. Its not like Im a woman who use to enjoy sex and now I dont. That could very well be hormonal. In my case, I have never had a sexual attraction for anyone - male or female. I enjoy snuggling with my boyfriend, going out with him, and all the other non-sexual things couples do."

Coming Out

Interestingly enough, it seems as if Monica and her boyfriend are not alone. What was once something that many people kept to themselves is now coming out of the closet and members are happy to finally be able to find each other and to define themselves as asexual. Asexuality is emerging as a new sexual orientation.

"Im kind of glad there is a name for this. I didnt feel broken, just different, and I didnt know what to call it. Now slowly but surely Im finding others who are just like me. Like this guy who started this website - http://www.asexuality.org/home/ - for people like us."

The Growing Debate

Of course there is growing debate in the mental health and medical community about the term asexual. Some professionals believe that people who do not care about sex at all are either experiencing a physical, emotional, or hormonal problem. There are many who define humans as "sexual beings" who should normally desire a sexual relationship with their partners.

Positive Proof?

People who are asexual feel that this is incorrect, and that is just the effort of medical professionals to tell them what is wrong with them in order to fix them. Or it is just out of ignorance that many professionals dont know about this community of people. But slowly things are beginning to change. Concrete research is something most professionals will accept as proof of recognition.

In a study conducted last year (2004) by Anthony Bogaert, a psychologist and human sexuality expert at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario-- results concluded that 1 in 100 adults were asexual. That can be defined as 1% of the population which is not too far behind the 3% of the population who are gay.

Celibate or Asexual?

People who are asexual want it to be known that there is a concrete difference between celibacy and asexuality. Someone who is celibate is someone who has chosen to abstain from sex - Asexuals have not made that choice. Just as the heterosexual didnt choose to be attracted to the opposite sex or the homosexual didnt choose to be attracted to the same gender - neither has the asexual made a choice - its just the way they have always been.

Is this a new thing?

The only thing new about asexuality is the fact is that there is finally some scholarly study and research beginning on the topic and therefore it is receiving more media and therefore public attention.

"There is quite a bit of circumstantial proof that people who have lived decades, even centuries, ago were asexual. This is nothing new - its just getting its fair share of publicity - finally!"

Learn more about asexuality: http://www.asexuality.org/home/

Find an asexual support group in your area: http://asexuality.meetup.com/

The next United Asexuality Meetup Day is on September 3rd.

Famous asexuals:

Sir Issac Newton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton

H.P. With many people flocking to have the procedure done it has become one of the most popular eye surgeries. The idea that lasik is a solution for anyone with bad vision also proves that much is unknown about lasik. Before committing to the surgery patients should look into what lasik is and what it can do for vision.

Lasik stands for laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. Lasik is where the surgeon cuts a small flap in the cornea and then uses a laser to reshape the inner area of the cornea. The cornea can be related to many vision issues. Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and Astigmatism can all be solved through lasik eye surgery. How to

Before getting lasik a patient is examined by their eye doctor. During the examination pictures of the cornea will be taken to see what corrections need to be made. The overall health of the patient and patients eyes are also considered when deciding if a person is a good lasik candidate. Any conditions, such as dry eye syndrome, may affect a persons ability to get lasik.

After lasik the patient can go home and within a few days is usually recovered enough to resume daily routine activities. Most people experience success and will see clearly right after the surgery. Some people may experience side effects like night time vision problems and light sensitivity. Rare side effects like infection can also occur, but most often can be avoided by following doctors orders.

Lasik is a fairly new procedure and long term data has not been studied. Some people do require the use of reading glasses as they age even though they have received lasik and achieved good results. The patient should discuss all concerns and expectations with their surgeon before the lasik procedure to ensure they completely understand the process and outcome possibilities.

About The Author

Stephen Kreutzer is a freelance publisher based in Cupertino, California. Here you go...

1. Always apply a light moisturizer, under-eye cream and sun-screen before leaving your house. Even if you are not going out, a hint of tinted moisture does no harm.

2. If you want to get that glow, ensure theres no trace of makeup before you go to bed. See some homemade makeup removers: http://www.ultimate-cosmetics.com/beauty/homemade-recipes/makeup-removers.htm

3. Sleep does wonders to your skin, so try to get atleast 7 to 8 hours of rest everyday. See Beauty Sleep: http://www.ultimate-cosmetics.com/beauty/body-basics/beauty-sleep.htm

4. Try and go in for a massage and facial at least once a month. This will help tone your skin. See facial massage: http://www.ultimate-cosmetics.com/beauty/skin-care/facial-massage.htm

5. Drink lots of water, and if you can try to have at least 2 to 3 glasses of coconut water a day.

6. Work out is a good way to keep your skin healthy as it detoxifies the body. If you love to swim hit the pool everyday. For those who are not fond of water; you have the option of going for a jog.

7. Stick to a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. Opt for salads instead of oily food. Use less oil while cooking. Try steaming, baking or roasting instead. It saves you a lot of calories, and is lighter to digest.

8. Is is also very important to go on a calorie binge at times. If gorging on a chocolate pastry makes you happy, go ahead. But remember to do this not more once a week. It could go the other way, and you may have to repent.

Join the discussion: How can I get a glowing and radiant skin? http://www.ultimate-cosmetics.com/discus/about13.html

About The Author

Nitin Jain

For www.ultimate-cosmetics.com

If you wish to reproduce the above article you are welcome to do so, provided the article is reproduced in its entirety, including this resource box and LIVE link to our website.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://article-read.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-to-get-that-glow-article.html' title='How To Get that Glow!!!
